The Golden LEAF Foundation awarded $1.5 million to the the town of Oak Island through its Disaster Recovery Grant Program to help rebuild the Oak Island Pier. 

The Me Fine Foundation raised over $210,000 at the the 2017 Me Fine Gala to help provide financial assistance and emotional support programs to parents and caregivers whose children are receiving critical medical treatment from Duke and UNC Children’s Hospitals.

The Greene County Community Foundation awarded $4,210 in local grants from its community grantmaking fund. This year’s nonprofit recipients are: Girl Scouts- North Carolina Coastal PinesGreene County Public LibraryMuscular Dystrophy Association, and Prevent Blindness North Carolina

The Golden LEAF Foundation board of directors awarded $2.6 million to the Public Schools of Robeson County and $405,395 to the Pine Terrace Volunteer Fire Department to replace vehicles and equipment that was damaged or destroyed due to Hurricane Matthew. 

The Women’s Giving Network of Wake County awarded $95,800 in local grants this year, bringing their cumulative grantmaking total to more than $1.1 million. The grant recipients are Friends of the NC Museum of Natural Sciences; JusticeMatters, Inc.; and the Raleigh Wake Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness.

NC WARN hosted a presentation with Bill Powers, P.E., author of NC Clean Path 2025, on November 3rd at the Friday Center to discuss putting the plan for local solar and battery storage into action across NC.

Unique Places To Save recently hired its first staff, naming David Harper executive director and Christina Vad program coordinator.

More than 50 regional potters participated in the Potters of the Piedmont Pottery Festival on November 11th at the Leonard Recreation Center in Greensboro.

On November 9th, Susan G. Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast hosted a fundraising luncheon to raise awareness of the impact the foundation’s National Research Program has had on local and national breast cancer research.

The NC General Assembly recently appointed Tracy Zimmerman, executive director of the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation, to its new Birth-to-Eight Interagency Task Force. Leaders of North Carolina’s public education system have also named Zimmerman to participate in My Future NC.

Each year more than 100 universities from across the United States are invited to nominate two graduating seniors for The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design‘s Windgate Fellowship, which awards $15,000 to ten seniors to support a project that will further their careers and contribute to the advancement of the field.

On November 7th, 14 former homeless men and women received certificates of completion from the Durham Rescue Mission’s one-year recovery program at a Victory Program Graduation & Reception in the organization’s Storr Chapel. 

The John Rex Endowment announced new members and officers of the board of directors. New board members include Warren Ludwig, PhD, child welfare and mental health consultant; John Rusher, MD, of Raleigh Pediatric Associates; Kate Simpson, vice president of TrueBridge Capital Partners.

The North Carolina Technology Association hosted the NC Tech Awards on November 9th at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham, recognizing organizations and individuals that have demonstrated excellence in technology and business.

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the Institute for Nonprofits will host Dinners With Purpose featuring Nate Myers, founder of the Malkuta Project, on November 16th at Witherspoon Student Center.

The Institute for Emerging Issues at NC State University opened registration this week for the 2018 Emerging Issues Forum, “kidonomics: Investing Early in Our Future,” which will take place on February 5th-6th in Raleigh.

The Durham Art Council‘s 2017 Durham Art Walk Holiday Market kicks off the holiday season on November 18th and 19th with local art, music, food, and family activities at various locations in Durham’s downtown district.

WGU North Carolina and its parent university—Western Governors University—will award up to $500,000 in scholarships to new students throughout the country, with at least $50,000 being awarded in North Carolina. Applications are now being accepted through December 31st for the Take Flight Scholarship; and now through January 31st for the WGU Salute To Veterans Scholarship.

Volunteer2ServeNGive is working to turn a shuttle bus into a Training and Resource Mobile Unit offering a variety of services, including skill training, adult education programs, community outreach, resume writing workshop, financial literacy, and more, to those experiencing homelessness and those underemployed.

The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design and Asheville-based nonprofit Mountain BizWorks are accepting applications for experienced craft entrepreneur speakers through November 17th for an upcoming peer-to-peer workshop series. 

Dogwood Alliance is hosting another Cheers for Trees in Durham on November 14th at Bull City Burger and Brewery to discuss why forests should be at the forefront of the conversation about climate, energy choices, economic development, and justice for NC communities. 

The Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge will host its annual Day with the Turkeys event on November 18th to celebrate the lives of its turkey residents. Visitors will get the chance to meet and give special holiday treats to turkeys.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals NC, Triangle Chapter will host a 2017 National Philanthropy Day celebration on November 16th at Brier Creek Country Club to celebrate the leadership and generosity of community leaders.

Financial Pathways of the Piedmont has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

The State Employees’ Credit Union is increasing its 2018-2019 support for NC GreenPower’s Solar Schools program. The SECU Foundation program renewal will provide a two-year $150,000 challenge grant for up to 10 K-12 public schools to earn the opportunity for a solar array system to be installed on their campus.

Sections of the internationally celebrated AIDS Memorial Quilt – the 54 ½ -ton, handmade tapestry that stands as a memorial to more than 96,000 individuals lost to AIDS – will be on view from November 16th-19th at the Greensboro History Museum.
