The John A. Hartford Foundation awarded four new grants totaling nearly $7 million to advance age-friendly care and support diverse family caregivers: Patient Priorities Care; The Health and Aging Policy Fellows program; Case Western Reserve University Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, in partnership with CVS MinuteClinics; and The Diverse Elders Coalition.
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation awarded Friends of the Children a $1.75 million grant to support two-generation (2Gen) efforts in Los Angeles and New York City that will improve outcomes for families that have had involvement in the foster care system. The pilots will provide the children of parents aging out of foster care with a salaried, professional mentor (a Friend) for 12 ½ years.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, are committing $2 billion to the Day 1 Fund. The commitment will be split between the Day 1 Families Fund to help homeless families, and the Day 1 Academies Fund for creating preschools in low-income communities.
The Otto Bremer Trust awarded 140 grants totaling $9,830,155 as part of its most recent grantmaking cycle.
The Ammon Foundation is awarding $32,904 in scholarships for the Fall 2018 semester through its Ammon Recovery Scholars’ program. This money will help 24 students currently in recovery from addiction attend 21 different colleges or universities throughout the United States with scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $7,500.
Barrow Neurological Foundation, part of Dignity Health St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center, raised nearly $40 million between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018. This record-breaking fundraising total is bolstered by a $25 million gift from The Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation to establish the Ivy Brain Tumor Center at Barrow Neurological Institute.
The Keck School of Medicine of USC received a $100,000 donation from PUMA for the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research. The fund supports research at the school on new targeted therapies for lupus and the complications it can sometimes cause.
The Free Library of Philadelphia will receive a $479,955 grant over three years from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for their Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. Working with language connectED, the Library will develop curriculum for four half-day Community-Centered Libraries workshops for staff.

The Global Down Syndrome Foundation’s 10th Anniversary of the Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show will be held during Down Syndrome Awareness Month on Saturday, October 20 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel. As part of the event’s celebrity lineup, film stars Colin Farrell and Zack Gottsagen will receive Global’s Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award.
The Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology Denver helped spruce up their neighborhood after the excitement of a recent Rockies vs. Cardinals three-game series at Coors Field. Volunteers took to the streets and back alleys around Park Avenue and Blake Street in downtown Denver to clean up food wrappers, bottles and cigarette butts left behind by fans.
Genesys Works named Mioshi Moses the new Executive Director of the organization’s National Capital Region site. She will lead the organization’s programs, which provide life-changing work opportunities to high school students in underserved communities.

Charity Navigator has launched a Hot Topic for Hurricane Florence, featuring close to 30 highly-rated nonprofits responding to relief and recovery efforts in the affected areas. The list, which Charity Navigator will continue to add to, is divided into four categories: General Aid and Relief, Medical Services, Animal Care and Services, and Financial Aid for Families.
Artivate’s annual fundraiser “Celebrate Artivate!” will take place Friday, October 19th, at the Woman’s Club of Bethesda, Maryland.
