Urban Ministries of Wake County, participating Chick-fil-A restaurants, and Systel Business Equipment partnered for Christmas in July on Friday, July 22. Customers who brought five non-perishable food items or a $5 donation and received a free Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich or 8 count nuggets. Last year’s food drive brought in more than 5,400 pounds of food and raised over $2,100.

Kendra K. Martin was named Executive Director for United Way of Lee County after serving in that role since April 1 on an interim basis. Martin joined the United Way staff more than two years ago as a part-time coordinator for VolunteerLee.com, the United Way website connecting volunteers with local nonprofits needing their help.
Mona Baset and Marc Gustafson have been appointed to the 24 Hours of Booty board of directors. Baset and Gustafson have a combined 21 years of experience with 24 Hours of Booty.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences held a “Pioneer Night” on July 21, the event included Haliwa-Saponi artist and elder Senora Lynch who demonstrated pottery making and discussed her tribe with visitors.

NC WARN filed a petition with the NC Utilities Commission that seeks to end the longstanding pattern of Duke Energy and the regulators deciding billion-dollar cases behind closed doors. They are calling for an open discussion on a rules change that would create a fair and transparent process for settling those cases.
