North Carolina State Employees Combined Campaign will surpass $100 million in contributions – voluntary contributions made by North Carolina’s own state employees. Nearly 1,000 charities are eligible for contributions. The 2015 Campaign will kick-off with a huge charity fair and gathering of state employees on August 14th, at Bicentennial Mall in downtown Raleigh.
The RiverRun International Film Festival has received $148,000 in operation and project grants. Several foundations contributed to RiverRun’s grant including the National Endowment for the Arts, the Millennium Fund, the James G. Hanes Foundation City of Winston-Salem, The Winston-Salem Foundation, and the Forsyth County Tourism Development Authority.
GSK Opportunity Scholarships are awarded to Triangle residents who have overcome significant adversity and are changing their lives through higher education. Recipients receive up to $20,000 for tuition, books and other educational expenses. The scholarship was established with the Triangle Community Foundation in 1988 through a GSK endowment. Scholarships will be presented on Wednesday, July 16 and awardees include Noveline AungMin, Alan Chase, Megan Dew, Reese McDonald, Kathryn Layne Smith, and Rianne Troutman.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and the North Carolina Recreation and Park Association are collaborating to transform open spaces and build healthier communities by installing PlayPrints across the state. International House welcomes Nate Evans to the role of Executive Director. Nate most recently served as a democracy and governance advisor in the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Middle East Bureau.
The Board of Trustees of Ravenscroft School has elected Smith Anderson Partner Caryn Coppedge McNeill as its new board chair. McNeill, who has served on the board since 2010 and has three children who attend Ravenscroft, is the first female board chair in the 156-year history of the school. She began her term July 1.
John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy called into question the ethics and legality of Gene Nichol’s move to reopen the Center for Poverty, Work, and Opportunity under a new name. Pope Center’s President Jenna A. Robinson has affirmed this perspective. “It should have its own website, its own staff, and its own off-campus office. It should also be established as a 501(c)3 organization separate from the University,” she states.
Skyler Paschall and Jillian Owens
Skyler Paschall and Jillian Owens were selected as first- and second-place winners, respectively, in the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for North Carolina’s Sixth District.
Bob Campbell has been appointed as the new Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Winston-Salem Area Command of The Salvation Army.
Smith Anderson Partner Robert Rehm has been selected to serve on the Board of Directors of StepUp Ministry, effective July 1. StepUp Ministry is a nonprofit corporation headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, that partners with adults and children in the shared goal of stable lives through jobs and life skills training.
Jorie Slodki has be appointed Director of Education for Burning Coal Theatre Company. She will take charge of the educational programs such as ShakeScenes and WillPower.

The Helen Keller Foundation in conjunction with IndoJax Surf Charities has scheduled a list of activities and surf campus in July for hard of hearing and visually impaired individuals. Keller Johnson-Thompson, Vice President of the Keller Foundation and Derek Rabelo, a Brazilian professional surfer blind since birth, will participate in the screening of the movie “Beyond Sight,” the story of Rabelo’s dream to surf the famous and dangerous Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The movie will be presented Thursday evening, July 16, at Blockade Runner Beach Resort.

Superior Court Judge Fox
Delete Blood Cancer and North Carolina volunteers, organized as Save the Fox Committee continue to search for a bone marrow match for Superior Court Judge Carl Fox of Chapel Hill. Finding a match for African Americans is more challenging due to the 7 percent ratio of Blacks in that national registry, thus supporters will hold a registration drive in Chapel Hill on July 17 and 18 which coincides with National African American Bone Marrow Awareness Month.
“Building a Stronger Raleigh Together”, a partnership between Passage Home, and the J.D. Lewis Multi-Purpose Center, kicked off its campaign to raise $250,000 in 2015 in an effort to break the cycle of poverty in Southeast Raleigh through access to stable housing, healthy food, education, employment and opportunity. Passage Home, the J.D. Lewis Multi-Purpose Center and community supporters will hold a free Family Festival at Needham B. Broughton High School on August 1.

Gateway YWCA is partnering with the Tanglewood Heart & Stroke Walk for their new “Walking Wednesday” initiative. Starting Wednesday, July 15, the Gateway YWCA will open their doors every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. for any community member who would like to walk on their indoor track. This initiative will take place from Wednesday, July 15 through December 16, 2015.
In celebration of 3o years working to make North Carolina a healthy place for teens, Sexual Health Initiatives For Teens (SHIFT NC), formerly The Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina will hold “Take Flight with SHIFT NC” a fundraiser in September.

The Emily K Center would like to invite the public to attend their annual Summer Scholars Project Fair and Picnic on July 17th. They will celebrate the conclusion of their Summer Scholars program and students will share their final projects.
