The Winston-Salem Foundation awarded four Community Grants totaling $66,100 in March: Piedmont Land Conservancy received $10,000 for a full-time land protection specialist for a third year; Sawtooth School for Visual Art received $20,000 for a director of data and information services for a second year; SHARE Cooperative of Winston-Salem received $1,100 to attend Up & Coming food cooperative conference; and Ujima Community Development Corporation received $35,000 to support economic development activities in the City View neighborhood.
Lead for North Carolina received $500,000 from the SECU Foundation. The grant will assist with first-year funding for 20 college graduates to participate in a cohort program designed to recruit young leaders in the state and provide them with training and placement in a two-year paid local government fellowship.
Family Care Center of Catawba Valley received grants from the Rotary Club of Lake Hickory and Bank of America and raised over $14,000 at its Second Chance Silent Auction & Brunch.

MDC is expanding its approach of investing in solutions to the South’s most pressing challenges through a new Passing Gear Philanthropy Institute. Start-up funding for the Institute has been provided by the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, Ford Foundation, The Duke Endowment, Marguerite Casey Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation. Applications for the 2019-2020 Institute cohort will be accepted through May 20.
Sara Thames, Reed and Feed
Read and Feed named Sara Thames as its Program and Evaluation Director. A licensed K-12 school counselor, Thames previously worked with Wake County Public Schools and was a contributor for the Raleigh Moms Blog.
Hannah Thompson of Pelham received a $10,000 high school scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The scholarship is part of the SECU “People Helping People” High School and Community College Scholarship programs.
Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina will be granting the wish of 7-year-old Jensen from Wake County, who has a cardiac condition, to the San Diego Zoo with his family on Friday, with a reveal at the Duke Lemur Center on April 12, 2019 beginning at 1:30pm. Jensen’s wish was supported with fundraising efforts of Apex Friendship High School, through the Kids for Wish Kids program.

North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation launched an online companion to its Guide to Family Forward Workplaces, a tool to help employers incorporate family-friendly workplace practices, The guide is part of Family Forward NC, an initiative to improve children’s health and well-being and keep businesses competitive by increasing access to research-based, family-friendly practices.
The JC Raulston Arboretum Garden Party and Rare Plant Auction returns to North Carolina State University May 5th from 2:30 to 6:00 PM. Sponsored by the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation, proceeds will benefit the daily operations of the Arboretum. Click here for information and ticket purchases.
The Durham Rescue Mission will host their Annual Easter Community Dinner and Easter Basket Give-away on Friday, April 19th at 12:00 PM. Durham Rescue Mission will be giving away Easter baskets to at-risk children in attendance, free bags of groceries to adults, and free clothing.

4.30.19 Don’t Waste Durham will meet to talk about waste reduction initiatives in Durham community and the Triangle from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Emily K Center. Attendees should bring questions and concerns related to reducing, reusing, and recycling, and a sack lunch.
4.30.19 BikeWalkNC hosts Lobby Day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the General Assembly Legislative Office in Raleigh. Attendees will talk with legislators about how to positively impact safety for cycling and walking and to promote understand of the existing health, environmental, economic and placemaking benefits of investments in active transportation infrastructure. 5.6.19 Welwynn Outpatient Center hosts a charity golf tournament to benefit Healing Transitions. Sponsors and golf teams can sign up for the Welwynn Charity Golf Classic.
5.17.10 Triangle Learning Network is celebrating the diversity of learning opportunities across the region with the Triangle Learning Days May 17th and 18th. Organizations of all kinds will be hosting educational events for learners of all ages. 5.17.19 The Convention Committee of North Carolina Parent Teacher Congress hosts the 2019 NCPTA Convention in Charlotte. This year’s theme is Celebrating the Legacy and Continuing the Journey with a focus on Leadership Matters. Convention takes place at UNC Charlotte Center City on May 17th and May 18th. Registration.
