Asheville Area Habitat ReStore will celebrate a $1 million milestone from Silent Auction proceeds on March 20th. The  “a million dollar idea” was inspired by ReStore volunteer Alan Williams, a retired teacher and self-proclaimed antiques freak, who has spearheaded the curation of each auction since 2005. Proceeds from ReStore sales help fund the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity’s building programs.

Carolina Small Business Development Fund was awarded a $2.8 million grant to support economic development through its growing partnerships with the state’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The initiative, made possible through the Wells Fargo Diverse Community Capital Program, will provide small business coaching and access to flexible loans geared towards African-American entrepreneurs.

North Carolina Community Foundation elected Mary Willis to the foundation’s statewide Board of Directors. Willis is the CEO, president and chair of Fidelity Bank. 

NC-TV Public Media North Carolina and South Carolina ETV will launch the fourth season of REEL SOUTH on Thursday, April 11th on PBS stations. The documentary series supports independent filmmakers telling stories of the American South. The new season showcases nine new independent films, a new distributor (PBS Plus) and a new host, Valerie June, an Americana star from Memphis, TN. UNC-TV recently received a National Endowment for the Arts Art Works grant of $25,000 to support coproduction of the series.

Johnston Community College Foundation celebrated the life and philanthropy of the late Linda Vann Lassiter this month at an inaugural luncheon and women’s event named in her memory. The foundation awarded Sarah Godwin, an eighth grader from Selma Middle School, as the first recipient of a scholarship named after Lassiter. The Johnston County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that serve general needs in Johnston County. Deadline to apply is 12:00 p.m. on April 16th.

Johnston County Board of County Commissioners approved an allotment stating that every middle school in the county school system will have an SRO (School Resource Officer). 

Weaver Street Market, a food co-op in the Triangle,  will open a location in Downtown Raleigh’s Warehouse District and has selected A Place at the Table as its exclusive community partner in Raleigh for 2019. The goal of the partnership is to provide more than 12,500 free meal tokens to A Place at the Table — roughly a year’s worth of free meals provided by Raleigh’s first pay-what-you-can café.

Members of United Way of Henderson County’s eighth annual Rising Leaders Program graduated in March after eight months of training and community service designed to help graduates serve the nonprofit community. Launched in 2011, the Rising Leaders Program is sponsored by Friday Staffing and Carolina Village.

North Carolina Community Foundation welcomed Mary Willis as a member of it’s statewide board of directors.Willis is the CEO, President and Chair of Fidelity Bank.

The 9th Annual Carolina Cup takes place in Wrightsville Beach April 24th to April 28th. One of the largest paddle festivals, the event is organized by the Wrightsville Beach Paddle Club and sanctioned by the World Paddle Association. Germany’s Sonni Honscheid, won the women’s Paddle League World Title in 2018 and will return to defend her title in April.

The Duke Endowment welcomes Kristi Kessler Walters as a program officer in Higher Education. Walters Walters previously worked at the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations in Jacksonville, Fla., as the Interfaith Program Fellow, program officer and senior advisor to the president.

LEMUR, founded by NC native, Chris Burdick, sells handmade bags to support lemur conservation projects in Madagascar. Fifteen percent of LEMUR profits go directly to organizations dedicated to the cause.

N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources presents Phaedra Boinodiris, co-founder of womengamers.com, at a Thursday Talk presentation: Play Education and the Future of AI: A Woman’s Journey on March 21st at 12:30 p.m. at 109 E. Jones St. in Raleigh. Boinodiris is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and Sciences and a member of IBM’s Academy of Technology.

Wine To Water, a non-profit based in Boone, hosts World Water Day on March 23rd at Ransom Pub located at 747 W. King Street in Boone. Free and open to the public. Media is invited to generate awareness of the global water crisis.

V Foundation for Cancer Research announced fundraising initiatives for March that coincide with college basketball tournaments. Constellation Brands and Applebee’s Mid-Atlantic will celebrate the late Jim Valvano’s “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”® spirit by offering opportunities for supporters to help the V Foundation fund innovative cancer researchers.

Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander book series, will visit two N.C. Dept. of Natural and Cultural Resources attractions for ticketed events April 26th through April 28th.  Gabaldon’s stories take place in North Carolina, including Tryon Palace in New Bern and Alamance Battleground in Burlington. Tickets are available for the Tryon Palace events and the Alamance Battleground events. 

SECU Foundation is supporting a new healthcare pilot in partnership with the Hospice and Home Care Foundation of North Carolina. The Foundation’s $268,196 three-year challenge grant will help address the shortage of registered nurses in home health and hospice settings. Officials from HHCF were presented with a ceremonial check by SECU Foundation Board Chair Bob Brinson during a special event held in Raleigh.

Martin County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that serve general needs in Martin County. Applications must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. on April 9th.

The Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business will host a conversation on race and racial healing with four Ashoka Fellows on Wednesday, March 20th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Free. Registration required.

Triangle Artworks will host a Lunch & Learn: Everything You’ve Always Wanted to Know About Residencies (But Didn’t Know Who to Ask!) on Friday, March 22nd at 11:30 a.m. at RTP Frontier. Registration is free and food trucks will be at the event.

Duke Sanford Center for Strategic Philanthropy & Civil Society welcomes Alberto Ibarguen, President and CEO of the John S. & James K. Knight Foundation, at the Foundation Impact Research Group Seminar on Wednesday, March 27th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Ibarguen is the former publisher of The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald. Brunswick County Community Foundation is currently accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that serve general needs in Brunswick county.  Deadline to submit applications is 12:00 p.m. on April 2nd.

NC Council of Churches will host a summit on the opioid epidemic in North Carolina on Thursday, March 21st from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m at the North Carolina Museum of History.  The summit theme is Healing, Hope, and Recovery. Attendees will learn more about the state of overdoses in NC, hear individuals impact stories, and discuss how communities of faith can provide compassionate help. Registration is free and open to the public.

Bertie-Hertford Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that support the needs of women and children in Bertie and Hertford counties. Application deadline is 12 p.m. on April 9th.

Northern Albemarle Community Foundation is awarding grants to nonprofits serving general community needs in Camden, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties. Applications must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. on April 9th.

Activate Good has full scholarship opportunities for teens interested in volunteer service hours and leadership experience this summer. Teens Change the World! is a week-long service and leadership experience to give teens the opportunity to volunteer with different nonprofits, learn about a variety of local causes, hear from social impact experts, and even pitch their ideas for a social impact project to business and community leaders. Applications being accepted now.

Alleghany County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from nonprofits serving general needs in Alleghany County. Awards average $1,000. Board will review requests up to $5,000. Deadline to apply is 12:00 p.m. on April 16th. 

Lenoir County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that serve general needs in Lenoir County. Deadline to apply is 12:00 p.m. on April 16th.

Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center is offering a professional coaching program to help nonprofits improve volunteer programs to best serve their mission. With a training grant from Gov. Cooper’s Office, the Service Enterprise Diagnostic Plus (SED+) program costs $100 for NC nonprofits and those involved in disaster recovery services receive priority. Registration required.

Franklin County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications, beginning March 22nd, from area nonprofits that serve general needs in the local community. Applications must be submitted by April 23rd.

Legal Aid of North Carolina is accepting applications for the Witness for Justice Program for The Farmworker Unit, a statewide project designed to provide high quality civil legal services to address the special legal needs of migrant and seasonal farmworkers in North Carolina. 

Ashe County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that serve general needs in Ashe County.  Grants typically range from $500 to $1,000 and special consideration will be given to education-focused projects or initiatives. Deadline to apply is by 12:00 p.m. on April 16th. 

The Windgate Museum will fund $5,000 stipends for interns institutions around the country, including the Asheville Art Museum. Interns will work under the direction of curators or directors in contemporary craft collections, and programs.

Chowan Community Funds Foundation will award grants from Ann Sams Endowment Fund to nonprofits serving general needs in Chowan county. Applications are due by 12:00 p.m. on April 9th.

The Charlotte, Triad and Triangle Chapters of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will host the  15th Annual NC Philanthropy Conference on Monday, August 5th at the Charlotte Convention Center. Early-bird registration opens soon.

Craven County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that serve general needs in Craven county. Applications are due by 12:00 p.m. on April 9th.

Yadkin County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from area nonprofits that serve general needs in Yadkin County. Awarded proposals have historically average $1,500 although the board will review requests up to $5,000. Deadline for submission is 12:00 p.m. on April 16th.

2019 Points of Light offers scholarships for professional development. The Jill Friedman Fixler award is open to volunteer managers or leaders to cover registration and travel to the conference, up to $1,500. See application information. Deadline is March 15th.

Shift NC hosts State of Adolescent Sexual Health forum on Friday, March 15th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill. Lee Storrow, Executive Director, North Carolina AIDS Action Network is the keynote speaker. Tickets are $25.

 The 7th Annual PlayMakers Repertory Company fundraiser for Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS and the North Carolina AIDS Action Network takes place Monday, March 18th at LOCAL 506 in Chapel Hill. Broadway Twisted is an evening of gender-swapped showtunes featuring local actors singing popular songs from broadway musicals. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. $12 tickets available now.

The Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center hosts The Great Human Race on March 23rd at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.  The 5K run and walk includes a Dog Walk, Kid Run, and performances by local artists. Register for the race.

Arts NC hosts Arts Day North Carolina’s statewide arts advocacy event, in Raleigh on March 26th and 27th. Arts representatives from across the state will attend panels, workshops and meet with legislators to discuss the impact of public funding for the arts. Registration is open for the conference and/or legislative day.  Tickets range from $20.00 for students to $175 for the full event.

The Guildford Green Foundation & LGBTQ Center hosts their annual Gala on Saturday, March 23rd at Starmount Forest Country Club. Tickets are $175 for sit- sit-down dinner guest speaker, Sarah McBride or $50 for the Green Party after the Gala hosted by Jessica Mashburn and Evan Olson.

NC Rural Center hosts Rural Day on Tuesday, March 26th at the Raleigh Convention Center. Advocates across the state will discuss issues facing rural communities and engage with leaders about solutions. Governor Roy Cooper and Lietenant Governor Dan Forest, via video address, are confirmed guest speakers. Register for convocation, legislative roundtables, and celebratory reception.

Jazz Arts Initiative invited Wynton Marsalis to unveil a new name, logo and arts programs in celebration of the organization’s 10th anniversary in Charlotte on Saturday, March 30th at 11:00 a.m. at LaCa Projects Gallery.

The Collider presents Climate City Expo: Exploring Innovative Climate Solutions & Business Opportunities in Asheville: March 29th to April 7th. The event offers professional and experiential tracks for individuals to explore innovation at the forefront of climate adaptation and resilience.

New America’s Better Life Lab, a nonpartisan initiative on creating a better work-life balance, will host the first Family Forward Summit on April 1st at the RTI International Horizon Building from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Keynote speaker: Brigid Schulte , author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love & Play when No One has the Time.

Danville Regional Foundation hosts Dr. Robert Putnam on Thursday, April 5th at the foundation’s Speaker Series event at the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research in Danville. Putnam will discuss his recent book, Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, at 7:30 a.m. Event is free and open to the public. Reservations required. 

Durham Rescue Mission seeks 1,500 Easter Baskets for Triangle’s At-risk Children. Pre-made baskets may be delivered to Mission’s Center for Hope by Friday, April 12, 2019.

City of Raleigh’s Fair Housing Hearing Board and the Fair Housing Project of Legal Aid of North Carolina will host the 16th Annual Raleigh Fair Housing Community Conference on April 18th. Freedom from Humiliation is the theme and Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is the keynote speaker. Attendees include housing advocates, community residents, government officials, and experts on civil and human rights, housing, lending, insurance, transportation, health, environmental justice, and community development. Registration is open to adults 18 and older and includes breakfast and lunch.

IntraHealth International hosts their annual SwitchPoint conference at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw April 25th and 26th. Speakers include Fati Abubakar, a documentary photographer and health worker in Nigeria. Discounts rate available for groups of 10 or more. Registration is open.

Wings Over Wayne Air Show takes place in Goldsboro on April 27th and 28th at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The Thunderbirds, the premier Air Force jet demonstration team, will conduct aerial displays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Event admission is $10 and includes a family-friendly expo and Kid’s Zone. The NONPROFITS STRONG Summit on Friday, May 17th will feature Zainab Baloch, ZB, a former and future Raleigh City Council Candidate who garnered an unprecedented number of voters in only two months in 2017. Baloch founded YAP!, Young Americans Protest, which provides local avenues for young people to bear witness to policy decisions and pursue accountability through voting and and action through technology. This year’s summit takes place at the NC State’s McKimmon Center for Extension & Continued Education in Raleigh.
