The Forsyth Promise received $150,000 from StriveTogether. Grant funds will be used to improve core community education outcomes by reducing racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps.
Onslow Caring Communities Foundation awarded $34,880, from their community grantmaking fund and the Dallas Fred Allen Endowment, to local nonprofits supporting the community.
Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation will provide $200,000 to Salem Academy and College’s Step Up for Salem campaign which was created to raise $10 million to fortify the school’s economic stability.
Chiesi USA, Inc. donated more than $800,000 through its corporate social responsibility program. The Cary-based pharmaceutical company partnered with the Me Fine Foundation, Children’s Flight of Hope, the North Carolina Football Club, and the Durham Bulls to make donations to Triangle nonprofits.
The V Foundation for Cancer Research received nearly $8 million from the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund since its 2015 inception. The fund awarded 23 grants at 17 cancer centers nationwide to support research dedicated to the aggressiveness, therapeutic responsiveness and ultimate outcomes experienced by cancer patients from diverse ethnic populations, as well as supporting researchers from minority populations.

Corinth Holders High School welcomed Veda Tucker, spokesperson for Rachel’s Challenge, a program designed to inspire students to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is named after Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999.
The American Conservative Union Foundation released its ratings of the 2018 meeting of the North Carolina General Assembly. According to ACUF’s Year in Review, the North Carolina General Assembly’s overall conservative score improved compared to the 2017 session (from 64.21 percent to 70.94 percent).
Durham’s Partnership for Children collected more than 2,800 books for children across Durham County during their 13th annual Holiday Book drive with Barnes & Noble at Southpoint Mall.
The Me Fine Foundation premiered “See the Faces, Hear the Stories of Pediatric Illness & Medical Crisis,” a new video featuring two families brought together by hospital social workers to help families in need and improve outcomes in pediatric care.
Louisburg College appointed Dr. Bonnie Suderman as Vice President of Academic Life and Dean of Faculty. Suderman previously served as Assistant Superintendent and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Antelope Valley College in Palmdale, California.
The Charlotte Post Foundation-funded afterschool literacy program produced its first grade-level readers at Walter G. Byers Elementary School in Greenville. Of 22 students in The Post Foundation program for the 2017-18 academic year, 19 showed improvement.
Chowan Community Funds Foundation named Lynne Layton as Board President and Dr. Robert Christian Ford as Board Vice President. Layton is a local mortgage lender with BB&T and Ford is co-owner of Chowan Animal Hospital.
StepUp Ministry celebrated 30 years of serving adults and children in the Raleigh community with a gala in January. Presented by First National Bank, the event raised $236,826 to support 2019 efforts to serve courageous men, women, and children.
United Way of Forsyth County conducted a point-in-time count of the homeless community on January 30th. The event is part of the National Homeless Information Project designed to measure and combat chronic homelessness. Volunteers in Forsyth County also provided bags of necessities to distribute to homeless men and women.
The V Foundation for Cancer Research will partner with SAGERSTRONG Foundation, in memory of Craig Sager, to fund research related to blood cancers, notably information on early dietary changes to arm cancer patients in their battle with the disease.
IBM received an award from WomenNC. Stephanie Trunzo, Global Head of IBM Cloud Garage, will accept the CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women) award at Women NC’s 10th Annual Local-to-Global Forum on February 28th. Trunzo will also give the keynote address at this annual event on the status of women in North Carolina.

Individuals or a group of people who have given a substantial amount of time and talent to help others in the community can be nominated for special recognition in April. North Carolina high school students will compete in a statewide Poetry Out Loud competition on February 16th at the Triad Stage in downtown Greensboro. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and coordinated by the North Carolina Arts Council and the Poetry Foundation, the event is free and open to the public.
WNC Nonprofit Pathways will host “Sustainable Strategic Planning for Nonprofits on Saturday,” on February 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Toe River Arts in Spruce Pine, NC. Seminar costs $140 plus a $10 materials fee. Pathways scholarships are available for enrollment.

Foundation For The Carolinas opened a second round of grants for Hurricane Florence recovery efforts in NC and SC. Priority goes to groups serving residents in FEMA-disaster-declared counties. Foundation For The Carolinas opened the Longleaf Fund grant cycle for organizations that serve at-risk children and youth in Fayetteville, Rocky Mount and Charlotte, NC, and Spartanburg and Florence, SC.
