Duke Energy made a $18,500 donation to the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County in support of arts education programming for Wake schools. Artists in Schools, one of the programs supported by Duke Energy, brings in teaching artists for performances and residencies that integrate the arts with core subjects.
Carolinas HealthCare System received a charitable commitment on September 25th from the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation, establishing a $2 million Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation Endowed Chair in Cancer and Blood Disorders in support of academic and research efforts at Levine Children’s Hospital.
The Wilkes Community Foundation awarded $5,910 in local grants from its community grantmaking fund and the Kyle Hayes Memorial Endowment Fund.
From the Bald Head Island Conservancy to the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute, 54 science centers across the North Carolina will soon be receiving grant awards as part of the second year of the $2.39 million North Carolina Science Museums Grant Program.
Susan G. Komen announced 2017 research funding of $30.7 million for 98 research grants, with a focus on new treatments and understanding of the most lethal forms and stages of breast cancer. The grants include $1,315,573 in new funding for research at the Duke University Medical Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Cary Community Foundation gifted $10,000 in local grant awards from its community grantmaking fund to Donate Life NC, Kiran, Inc., the Lighthouse Foundation of Wake County, The Carying Place, InterAct Family Safety and Empowerment Center, and Triangle Family Services.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation – an affiliate and the primary grantmaking arm of Foundation For The Carolinas – recently awarded $630,000 to 27 organizations serving children, youth, and young adults of Mecklenburg County.

Marbles Kids Museum hosted its 10th Birthday Media Preview Party on October 26th to celebrate 10 years of FUNdamental play at Marbles with special activities all day including birthday candle obstacle courses, courtyard games, and pop-up play.
On September 28th, Arts For Life hosted Local Color, a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community, at The Rickhouse in downtown Durham. All of the proceeds from this event went directly back to the organization’s chapter at Duke Children’s Hospital.
Band Together kicked off its 2017-18 season with a Volunteer Social on September 27th held at the Oak & Dagger Public House. This year it is partnering with Triangle Family Services to focus on mental health.
Laila A. Bell is joining The Duke Endowment as associate director of learning and evaluation. Since 2010, Bell has been director of research and data at NC Child.
The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and WRAL-TV partnered for a day long “food-raising” drive on September 20th, raising 42,000 pounds of food, cleaning, and personal hygiene supplies for people in storm-impacted states.
The North Carolina Humanities Council‘s Board of Trustees selected Bland Simpson as the recipient of the 2017 John Tyler Caldwell Award for the Humanities, the Council’s most prestigious honor. The award recognizes Simpson for his lifelong achievements as a professor, author, musician, and environmentalist and for his work as a public humanities advocate across North Carolina. The Caldwell Award ceremony and reception will be held on October 27, 2017 at the UNC Friday Conference Center in Chapel Hill. This event is free and open to the public; a RSVP registration is required due to space limitations.

The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County will host its 13th annual Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? in private homes and event spaces throughout Wake County on November 2nd-4th. Each dinner will feature an artist with a significant NC connection, and proceeds will support the nonprofit’s Artists in Schools program.
The Executive Service Corps of the Triangle is hosting a free information and networking event on October 19th at the North Carolina Museum of Art in honor of the organization’s 30th anniversary.
Nominations are open through October 6th for the Guilford Nonprofit Consortium‘s 2017 Nonprofit of the Year. This award will be presented at the Consortium’s 7th annual celebration on November 2nd at the Greensboro Country Club.
Tickets are available for the Association of Fundraising Professionals Triangle, NC Chapter‘s foodie fundraiser benefiting TROSA. BBQ & Friends will take place on October 8th in Durham, and it will feature music, games, make-and-take crafts with The Scrap Exchange, and a sampling of food from around the Triangle.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ Nature Art Gallery presents “Deer, Oh Dear,” a selection of Shannon Bueker’s acrylic and watercolor paintings featuring deer. The exhibit will be open from October 6th–29th, and a gallery reception honoring the artist will be held October 7th.
The Collider joins with Asheville Museum of Science for the Science Pub, a free monthly science lecture preceded by light bites and beverages. On October 20th, Dr. Jared Westbrook, director of science at The American Chestnut Foundation presents, “Saving the American Chestnut: Introducing Disease Resistance to One of America’s Most Beloved Trees.”
The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) and Belk are partnering for the seventh year to present Lights! Camera! Fashion! on October 8th at Belk SouthPark. The event will include models featuring the retailer’s latest fall fashions to help support JLC’s mission.
The North Carolina Network of Grantmakers will host its annual Foundation Fair on October 18th in Swannanoa, NC to provide nonprofits in all areas of the state an opportunity to interact with and learn about foundations in North Carolina. Registration is open through October 9th.
Using its new exhibition as a springboard, GreenHill is hosting a three-part series of dialogues that honor differences and examine stereotypes, bias, and racism. All three dialogues will take place in The Gallery at GreenHill, and the first dialogue, “Implicit Bias,” will begin on October 10th.
Arts and cultural organizations in all 100 North Carolina counties will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the North Carolina Arts Council in October through music, dance, visual arts, theater, literature, and other art forms presented across the state.
