Reynolds American awarded United Way of Forsyth County with $20,000 to support a new initiative that will connect existing job seekers with short term training in high demand, higher paying careers.

The National Endowment for the Arts will award 16 arts organizations in North Carolina with a total of $1.3 million in funding for fiscal year 2019.

Durham Rescue Mission celebrated six women and twelve men as they received their certificate of completion from the Durham Rescue Mission’s Victory Program on Tuesday, May 21st in Durham.

Todd Desgrosseillers, president and CEO of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Inc., joined the board of directors for Camp Corral. Desgrosseillers is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and infantry officer who served the U.S. for 31 years. Previously, he served as the Executive Officer for the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines – deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005.

The Polka Dot Mama Melanoma Foundation (PDMMF) hosted the world’s largest skin screening on May 18, as part of Melanoma Awareness month. The previous record set in 2011 was 780 patients screened for skin cancer in an eight hour period. The PDMMF screened 963 patients in seven hours, breaking the Guinness Record by almost 200 patients. 32 Dermatologists donated their time and talent along with 125 medical and non-medical volunteers. The event included Spanish speaking professionals who were able to screen non-English speaking patients.

In celebration of co-founder Tom McGuire, Armstrong McGuire has established the Tom McGuire Memorial Fund at Triangle Community Foundation. The Fund honors Tom’s legacy of support for the people and programs that improve our community, especially through arts and education.

Coastal Credit Union Foundation hosted their 4th Annual ‘Power of Sharing’ Awards Gala on Thursday, May 23 in Raleigh.

The North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities appointed four new members to their board: State Senator Mujtaba Mohammed, representing the North Carolina Senate; Sherry Thomas, Director of the Exceptional Children Division of the Department of Public Instruction; Christopher Egan, Senior Director of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation; and Virginia Knowlton Marcus, Executive Director of Disability Rights NC.

The application period for Leadership North Carolina Class XXVII (2019-2020) is now open. Applications will be accepted through June 28.

The Young Affiliates, in collaboration with The Mint Museum, are seeking artists for the juried exhibition, “Coined in the South,” to be held at the museum’s Uptown location from October 11, 2019 to February 16, 2020. For the first time, prizes will be awarded, with a purse totaling $15,000.

Registration is now open for Intersections: A Community Conversation on Youth Homelessness, the LGBTQ Center of Durham Host Home Program‘s 1st Annual Host Home Symposium on Friday, June 7th from 9am to 4:00pm, at the Tate-Turner-Kuralt School of Social Work building on UNC Chapel Hill’s Campus.
