CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The African American Community Foundation has distributed $21,000 in grants to three nonprofits in the Charlotte area:
* The Sickle Cell Disease Association-Southern Piedmont received $10,000 for a project focusing on reducing health disparities through improved health literacy.
* The African Diaspora Arts Program received $7,000 for its summer camp program.
* Panorama Computer Learning received $4,000 for its Reach 500 & Teach 500 program, which will provide computer training to displaced manufacturing workers in Mecklenburg County.
The foundation, a program of Foundation for the Carolinas, provides financial support to efforts that promote educational excellence, economic self-reliance, equity and cultural awareness within the region's African-American community.
Since its 1994 inception, it has awarded $228,337 in grants to 41 organizations.
