The Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center received a $750,000 gift from Michael and Jessica Olander, allowing the school to own a building after decades of meeting in local church basements. Olander’s gift also allows more children to be served and renames the school Frankie Lemmon School and Development Center at The Eliza Kraft Olander Campus. Michael Olander is owner and CEO of MDO Holdings.

The State Employees Credit Union Foundation (SECU) introduced the https://www.ncsecufoundation.org/SECU Bridge to Career Program, a new scholarship in partnership with the North Carolina Community College System. The initiative aims to help remove financial roadblocks for unemployed and underemployed students seeking careers with sustainable wages in their communities. 

The V Foundation for Cancer Research awarded $25 million for cancer research in 2018 and awarded 28 V Scholar grants, 16 Translational grants, and 30 Designated grants to support research on all types of cancer.

Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina’s ninth Poet Laurate appointed by Governor Roy Cooper, will be installed at an induction ceremony on Monday, February 18th at 4:00 p.m. at the old House Chamber at the NC State Capitol. Reservations are needed for this free event.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute of Politics named Pat McCrory and Mike McIntyre as Fellows with the institute for Spring semester. McCory was the 74th Governor of North Carolina. McIntyre is a nine-term Congressman from NC’s Seventh District. Each fellow will lead a series of not-for-credit seminars over an eight-week period.

Orange County Rape Crisis Center welcomed new staff: Ashley Parks, Clinical Therapist; Hailey Leiva, Prevention Coordinator; and Tracey Miller, Community Education Director. 

Haven House earned a nationwide Points of Light Service Enterprise Certification through the Triangle Nonprofit and Volunteer Leadership Center. The center is taking applications for the next round of Service Enterprise Initiative training in April and May.

American Lung Association’s 17th annual “State of Tobacco Control” report finds North Carolina must do more to prevent and reduce tobacco use. Read the NC report that includes key findings and state rankings.

North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation released the Guide to Family Forward Workplaces. The report includes tools and tips for selecting and implementing family-friendly workplace practices.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation seeks volunteers to help with clean-up and maintenance needs after the government shutdown.  Clearing debris on trails and in camping areas are some of the tasks facing the National Park Service. Sign up today to help out.

Shining Light in Darkness (SLID) seeks a space in Raleigh to provide free self-defense classes led by a Sixth degree black belt on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month. Please contact foundation staff if you have space available or related ideas.

The Organization of Women in International Trade of the Greater Triangle is seeking volunteers to serve on their Board of Directors. Interested candidates should submit a resume and letter of intent to info@owit-gt.org.

Kiran seeks volunteers, notably those with language translation and interpretation skills in Arabic and other South Asian languages, to help provide services to South Asian victims of domestic violence in North Carolina. Complete a volunteer application.

NC Rural Center is offering Homegrown Leaders, a regional leadership and economic development training program designed to build regional collaboration across North Carolina. Apply by February 8th.

Family Care Center of Catawba Valley will break ground on two new duplexes for homeless families on Friday, February 8th at 11:00 a.m. Light refreshments provided at the Resource Center for volunteers to celebrate the project.

Marbles Family Heart Hop takes place Saturday, February 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This family-friendly event includes Valentine crafts, sweet treats, and a night of dancing. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

Duke’s Fuqua School of Business will host the 14th annual Sustainable Business and Social Impact Conference (SBSI 2019) on Wednesday, February 13th. Registration closes February 12th at 11:00 am. Free admission to all Federal Employees on furlough.

The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) of the Triangle is hosting a Valentine’s Day Committee Kickoff and Recruitment Mixer to network with nonprofit peers and meet YNPN committee chairs and board members. RSVP to attend at The House on February 14th in Durham at 6:00 p.m. 

BJH Foundation for Senior Services is accepting applications for grants to fund programs designed to meet the physical, mental, and social needs of Jewish adults in North and South Carolina. March 8th is the deadline to apply.

The Western and Eastern North Carolina chapters of The Alzheimer’s Association is calling on North Carolinians to turn the state purple for Alzheimer’s on Thursday, March 14th for is 2019 North Carolina Advocacy Day. This free event takes place from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the NC Museum of History. Registration is required to ensure an accurate headcount. 

FailFest, a storytelling event for nonprofits to celebrate epic fails, happens Thursday, March 14th at The Maywood in Raleigh from 5:00 pm. to 7:00 p.m. First 50 people to check-in receive a coupon for a free beer. 

The Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center hosts The Great Human Race on March 23rd at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.  The 5K run and community walk also includes a Dog Walk, Kid Run, and performances by local artists. Register for the race.

Dance Project hosts 3rd Annual Dance Marathon on Saturday, March 30th from 9:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m. at the Van Dyke Performance Space and LeBauer Park at the Greensboro Cultural Center. This fundraiser supports the School at City Arts and includes 12 hours of classes, performances, and prizes.

HandsOn Northwest North Carolina is accepting nominations for the 2019 Forsyth County Governor’s Volunteers Service Awards. Individuals or a group of people who have given a substantial amount of time and talent to help others in the community can be nominated for special recognition in April. Optional information sessions are available on February 12th and 13th at the Winston-Salem Foundation.

WNC Nonprofit Pathways will host “Sustainable Strategic Planning for Nonprofits on Saturday,” on February 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Toe River Arts in Spruce Pine, NC. Seminar costs $140 plus a $10 materials fee. Pathways scholarships are available for enrollment.

Ninety percent of children will experience the loss of someone they know before the age of 20. Yet in 2017, we still fall short in talking openly about death in ways that are meaningful to children. Good Grief’s mission is attempting to change the culture around death and provide children with the resources they need.
