The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will invest $6 million to advance the work of the Purpose Built Communities Network. The grant will advance the work and mission of Purpose Built Communities and the fields of community development and public health directly and indirectly.
Chevron will donate $500,000 to help support public schools in Houston-area cities and neighborhoods impacted by flooding from Tropical Storm Imelda.
Ashley HomeStore donated over $80,000 of furniture to A Sense of Home, a non-profit organization that “creates homes for youth who are transitioning out of the foster care system.”
The grantees include HOLLA, a school-based mentorship basketball program.
Twenty four schools in the Portland and adjacent metro area will receive a total of $300,000 from the Nike Community Impact Fund for programs that “increase physical activity for kids and build stronger communities.”
Give an Hour received a $100,000 grant from The Major League Baseball Players Trust to support outreach and help maintain the organization’s network of 7,000 mental health professionals.
With a recent $14.6 million gift to Carnegie Hall, Joan and Sanford I. Weill and The Weill Family Foundation became the first private donors to reach the “$100 million threshold in cumulative lifetime giving.”

Linda Smith launched The Christopher Smith Foundation, an organization she and her family created to “support the caregiving community.”
The Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation will relocate its headquarters and archives to the historical and longtime King home in Bangor, Maine. Additionally, a guest house next to the home owned by the Foundation will house up to five writers in residence.
Filip Dubovsky has joined the Sabin Vaccine Institute board of trustees.
Robert F. Smith of the Fund II Foundation was one of the individuals honored at the event.
Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America board of directors.
Nine philanthropists were awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy during the 2019 ceremony in New York City. Awarded individuals include Anne G. Earhart, Mellody Hobson and George Lucas, Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis, Morton L. Mandel, Robert F. Smith, Leonard Tow, and Ian Wood.
WIlliam Morgan was elected to joined the board of trustees of The Children’s Village.
The Phoenix Business Journal selected Outlier CEO David Tedesco as the winner of the 2019 Organizational Advocate Award, an award given individuals “addressing challenging issues that especially affect Phoenix Valley communities.”

The card distribution will tie in with the hospital’s other Halloween day-themed festivities including costume dress-up, pumpkin carving and arts and crafts.
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles began its annual Halloween greeting card drive. An anonymous donor has pledged $1 for “each holiday-themed card sent by October 29, committing up to $10,000.” Visit CHLA.org to participate.
